Early and correct diagnosis of glaucoma, the second most common cause of blindness, helps to reduce the risk of the disease and preserve the quality of life of the patient. It is the need for such examinations that is brought to the attention of the World Week of Glaucoma every year, which this year is on 12-18 March 2023, and the Slovak Glaucoma Society offers free measurement of intraocular pressure for the public.
–Early and correct diagnosis is crucial for every disease - especially for diseases such as glaucoma, where it is possible to intervene in time and set up targeted treatment so that it does not result in blindness. In this way, it is possible to contribute as much as possible to maintaining the highest possible quality of life for the patient. said Lenka Dunajová-Družkovská, State Secretary.
Each year, the Slovak glaucoma society has its activities to the challenges of the World Glaucoma Week. It organizes free pressure measurement in various cities of the Slovak Republic, lectures for students, educators and seniors. It also publishes a newsletter for the professional public. The reward for the activity involved is the finding that an increasing proportion of the population understands the concept of glaucoma and contributes to early detection of the disease by their active participation. Maintain the quality of life of a patient with glaucoma can be timely and correct diagnosis by the doctor, not least by compliance with the recommended treatment by the patient, stressed the president of the Slovak glaucoma company Maria Praženicová.
In medical terminology, glaucoma is one of the eye diseases associated with damage to the optic nerve. It is associated with worsening peripheral vision and may lead to blindness if late detection, late and inadequate treatment. The incidence of glaucoma in our adult population over the age of 40 is about two percent. However, it already occurs in children and newborns.
This is usually a slow-moving disease with no more pronounced symptoms. It is associated with increased intraocular pressure, but this may not be noticed at all by the patient. Therefore, it is the measurement of intraocular pressure that is very important for early detection. However, patients affected by the disease may also experience subtle symptoms such as mild headache, eye pain, eye pain, eye fatigue. There is also an acute form of glaucoma when the patient seeks out a doctor with headaches, eyes, eye redness, or decreased vision.
Glaucoma is a disease that cannot be cured completely. However, treatment can slow the progression of the disease and prevent the effects that impair the patient's visual function and hence quality of life.
