The government of the Slovak Republic agreed today during the exit meeting in Malá Lehota that the construction of the new National University Hospital General Milan Rastislav Štefánik in Bratislava Vajnory will be one of strategic investments. This project represents the largest investment in health in recent decades and a major step towards modern, accessible and dignified health for Slovak citizens. The Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Defence of the Slovak Republic will cooperate in the implementation of the hospital.
–After years of waiting, Slovakia finally deserves the 21st century hospital. With today's decision, we have laid the foundations for a future in which patients, doctors and nurses will not fight undignified conditions, but will have a high-end working and therapeutic environment, stated Kamil Šaško, Minister for Health.
The new hospital will be located on the land of former military barracks owned by the Department of Defence. With a capacity of 950 beds, of which 150 beds for intensive care, and with an annual capacity of more than 44 000 hospitalizations, the hospital will become a key centre of specialised and highly professional healthcare. The concept assumes that the new hospital will operate approximately 150 ambulances, 23 operating halls (outside the intervention or section halls) and complete SVaLZ workplaces so that it is possible to provide comprehensive care at the end hospital, without the need for unnecessary transfer of the patient between workplaces within the catchment area of Bratislava.
The hospital will offer a complete medical profile, including educational and research capacities. The project involves the integration of the Faculty of Medicine of Comenius University and the National Institute of Children's Diseases, thus creating a unique academic, research and clinical campus of world level.
Construction will start as early as August 2025 and the main construction works should be completed by the end of 2027. The total planned investment costs for the implementation of the investment project are estimated at EUR 1.27 billion, VAT excluded.
This is not just a building. It is a commitment to citizens, health professionals and future generations. Slovakia has taken a huge step forward today,The Minister of Shaško added.
