The government has approved the scope and conditions of healthcare provision in so-called detention centres, i.e. facilities for patients with mental illness who are dangerous to the surroundings. The new legislation paves the way for the functioning of facilities of this type. With the construction of a new detention facility the resort also counts in the framework of the Recovery and Resilience Plan of Slovakia. We have both a medical and ethical duty to provide decent care for patients suffering from mental illness and therefore pose a risk to society, according to Health Minister Vladimir Lengvarsky. According to his words, it is necessary to take into account a medical approach and create an appropriate environment for mentally ill patients with risky behaviour. It is not enough to isolate them from society. The detention facility will therefore be a unique medical facility. It will provide a special treatment regime for mentally ill patients with risky behaviour with protection for Prison and Judicial Guard officers. The new legislation was developed by the health department in close cooperation with the professional public, representatives of the Ministry of Justice and the Prison and Judicial Guard Corps. The regulation sets out in a comprehensive way the scope and conditions for the provision of healthcare to persons in detention under a special treatment regime to be provided by a detention centre or detention centre for minors. According to experts, the facility needs to provide institutional health care in continuous operation so that the purpose of the detection can be met. In addition to the protection of society, there is a potential improvement in the health of the person in the performance of the detection. This is only possible with continuous treatment, under the supervision of healthcare professionals with acquired specialisation. Currently there is already the first detention centre in Slovakia. It should be operational by the end of 2022.
