Frequently Asked Answers prepared by the Slovak Public Health Office:What is the disease agent of COVID-19?Animals on the market in the Chinese town of Wu-chan are expected to be the source of the disease. People are believed to have contracted contact with live animals that are also sold on the market mentioned above. So far, it is uncertain what kind of animal the disease might come from. What are the manifestations of COVID-19?The new coronavirus causes acute respiratory disease (fluid infection). These are general symptoms of virosis or classical respiratory diseases, such as influenza Þ temperature above 38 °C
cough, runny nose, muscle pain, joint pain, difficulty breathing During a more comprehensive examination, an X-ray finding of pneumonia is present. The incubation time for this type of coronavirus is given 2 to 14 days, on average 6 days. How is COVID-19 treated?COVID-19 is a viral disease and we include it as a droplet infection. It doesn't work antibiotics. There is no validated vaccine yet. Treatment is symptomatic. Supportive treatment is initiated in people infected with the new coronavirus to reduce the symptoms of infection. Commonly available medicines are used for supportive treatment. Treatment is individual and based on the patient's specific needs. What are the chances that I will become infected with the new coronavirus?People may get infections from people who have been confirmed to coronavirus. There has been no confirmed case of COVID-19 in Slovakia. Given the current travel possibilities, we cannot exclude the introduction of a new coronavirus into our territory. If you have not been in countries where COVID-19 is present or have not been in contact with persons visited by those countries, this is most likely due to the flu season in progress, other acute respiratory disease or flu or flu-like disease and therefore should not be panicked. Of course, even in this case, it is important to contact your treating doctor, as even these diseases can cause serious health complications. Can COVID-19 help prevent influenza vaccination?Influenza vaccination is appropriate, protecting against influenza during the current flu season. If a person gets sick of coronavirus infection, another disease going on at the same time means a high risk of complications. Is there a need for preventive compliance with some hygiene habits? In view of the ongoing influenza season, the public is advised to take precautions that are effective in relation to droplet infections:- wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water is not available, alcohol-based hand disinfectant should be used
- do not touch the eyes, nose and mouth, coronavirus can be transmitted by contaminated hands
- cover your nose and mouth when coughing and sneezing with a disposable tissue and then dispose of it
- Avoid close contact with people who show signs of cold or flu
- keep a distance of at least one metre between you and anyone who coughs or sneezes
- if you are ill, contact your treating doctor who will determine the next treatment procedure, at home on bed to treat the disease in a separate room
- In the home, take care of increased surface disinfectionInstructions for washing hands thoroughly: https://web.archive.org/web/20211103044727id /https://www.uzvsr.sk/docs/letaky/Letak SD cistych ruk 2018.pdfRecommendations for travellers:
- check your health within 14 days of arrival from the affected area (cough, sore throat, shortness of breath), fever)
- in case of clinical symptoms within 14 days of return, contact your treating doctor by phone and inform him of the travel history. If it is necessary to provide urgent medical care to a person with clinical symptoms, it is necessary to contact the operating centre of the emergency health service (the general doctor and rescue workers are following this situation with an emphasis on taking the necessary preventive measures as set out in the Guidelines for the Slovak Chief Hygiene in relation to the new coronavirus). Is it possible to test for coronavirus in Slovakia? If the doctor expresses suspicion of COVID-19 disease, with a responsible assessment of the clinical and epidemiological criteria with emphasis on the travel history, the patient is addressed at the appropriate infectological workplace to determine the next treatment procedure. Laboratory diagnosis of samples from a patient with clinical symptoms and travel history is provided by the National Reference Centre for Influenza established at the Slovak Public Health Office in Bratislava. The biological material should preferably be taken from patients in the first days after the onset of clinical signs of respiratory disease, at which time the virus is most likely to be collected. It is not appropriate to perform the collection prior to clinical signs when the amount of viral particles in the patient's body may not yet reach detectable levels. This means that during the incubation period the coronavirus test will most likely be negative - and yet, in a few days, the person may experience clinical symptoms caused by the presence of the coronavirus. Such a person may mistakenly think that it is not infectious and may spread the infection. The person who has returned from the area affected by the new coronavirus is advised to check for 14 days. At this time it is necessary to think about prevention. When sneezing, the nose and mouth should be covered with a disposable tissue, which should be thrown into the trash, as well as washing your hands frequently with soap and water. If a person is suspected of being infected with coronavirus and has not yet experienced any symptoms, it is possible, due to his own decision, to undergo domestic isolation for 14 days in a separate room, to increase the intensity of surface disinfection and to use protective equipment. This is also a standard procedure in other European countries with no need for strict quarantine.
