Minister for Health Kamil Šaško today presented a significant milestone in the financing of palliative care in Slovakia with representatives of the Association of Hospice and Palliative Care in Slovakia. The increase in reimbursement reflects the actual costs needed to care for terminally ill patients.
The Health Care Supervisory Authority and experts warned that the conditions for hospices had been significantly unbalanced and that many facilities had operated at the border of survival. Minister of Health Kamil Šaško sought solutions to improve the provision of dignified palliative care in Slovakia. The conclusion of an agreement with representatives of the Association of Hospice and Palliative Care of Slovakia is not only a technical result of the negotiations; it is an expression of respect for the work you do with immense commitment, humanity and expertise. 2025 is the year when we have fixed the long-term unequal financing system for hospice care, said the Minister for Health. As he added, these changes mean a significant increase in reimbursement and represent a fundamental shift in the real cost of palliative care.
Changes in reimbursements

–This agreement is not the end of the road, but the beginning of a new, more stable period of operation of hospice and palliative care, Minister K. Šaško took stock. At the same time, he appreciated the position of the general health insurance company, which in 2025 allocated an additional EUR 5.6 million to this area, thus exceeding its total expenditure on hospice and palliative care in excess of EUR 8.6 million. This has enabled contracts to be concluded and operations to be stabilised in many installations. As a result, more than 180 patients at risk of losing their bed in the hospice have managed to maintain care.
