Doctors in Slovakia have been given a new drug to combat COVID-19 disease. Minister for Health Marek Krajčí has been authorised for the unregistered medicine Ivermectin. The active substance has been authorised for therapeutic use for six months. On 26th January the Ministry of Health of the Slovak Republic received a request from the principal expert for the infectology of MZ SR prof. MUDr. Ivan Schréter, CSc. on the group authorisation of unregistered medicine Ivermectin for the needs of health institutions in the Slovak Republic. The Ministry of Health has authorised the therapeutic use of the unregistered product Ivermectin for medical purposes. Thus, for a period of 6 months, both hospital facilities and ambulances are authorised. The main indication of Ivermectin is prophylaxis and treatment of patients with COVID-19. It will also be available in pharmacies with a prescription in addition to hospitals. Ivermectin is an antiparasitic agent that also has very strong antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties in COVID-19. This is supported by an increasing number of studies which show its effectiveness not only in-vitro and animal models, but also in many clinical applications from centres and countries around the world. It will be given as part of another treatment. It is already registered in several countries, such as France, the USA, Sweden and Norway.
